Overcoming the Enemy

Passage Ephesians 6:13:
13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

When my husband and I first got married, his favorite teacher was Dean Sherman.  We listened to him every time we got in the car.  He taught a lot on Ephesians 6 and I rember him saying that some days are just evil.  Unfortunately, the enemy still has some power on this earth and I don’t think that’s hard to realize with the things that go on these days.  It seems that many Americans have lived in a “not in my backyard” mentality, or maybe I should say denial, because everything that the enemy does “there”, he does here.  We just don’t like to look at it.

1 Peter 5:8:
8Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Many Christians like to think that because Christ overcame the enemy, we never have to engage him in battle.  Some have even been deceived to the point that they believe if they engage in the war, they will bring on more warfare!  The truth is, as soon as you bow your knee and name the name of Jesus, you are considered a traitor to the enemy and you are already in the war.  If you don’t learn how or just refuse to fight you’re a sitting duck.  Satan is not polite.  He will not leave you alone if you leave him alone.  He doesn’t play fair, either.

So how do we handle such a tricky and ruthless enemy?  There are three main ways that God has revealed in His Word.

1. The Word of God itself –

Ephesians 6:17  Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

  1. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
  2. Worship Psalm 149:6 (Whole Chapter)
Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand; Often the Lord commnded the worshippers to precede the warriors in battle.  Worship is the safest place to be in a battle.  Once in a particuularly tough battle I asked the Lord when I could put my sword down and just relax.  His answer was, “Only when you worship.”
  3. The most powerful weapon we have is the blood of Jesus.  It gives us access to His presence, cleanses of all sin, and protects us.  The enemy has NO answer and NO weapon aginst The Blood of Jesus!

Revelation 12:11 (Whole Chapter)
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
