So maybe you were trucking along with everything going for you when you were sucker punched by life, or maybe it’s been a long string of one thing after another until it seems like there is just nothing left. Either way, this thing that you thought was your life is so dramatically different that you don’t have even the faintest idea as to what to do next. Taking the next step seems impossible or futile, partly because, if you can even figure out where your foot is, you don’t know where to place it, and partly because you are so emotionally exhausted that you don’t have the energy to try. You only have two choices. One is to give up. I don’t recommend this as it would be boring and even more depressing than your original dilemma. The other option is to decide to move on, even though you have absolutely no idea what that is supposed to look like.
Moving On Step 1: Grieve your losses. This is the most important step and if you skip it, you will inevitably end up right back here, only with more to grieve. So grieve. Mourn the loss of the way you thought things should be. Get angry, if you need to, at the people who should have done or not done things. Mourn the fact that now you have to figure this whole thing out.
Moving On Step 2: Forgive. Forgive the people who should not have done or didn’t do things. Forgive yourself for not being perfect. Forgive God for being perfect but not doing things your way. Determine that you will not let the actions of others or your own regrets determine your destiny.
Moving On Step 3: Rejoice! If it makes you angry just reading this, repeat steps 1 and 2. If you are ready, find something for which you are thankful. If you are having difficulty, start with the fact that you are breathing, conscious, and able to read this. Start thanking God for all the things you’ve taken for granted.
Moving On Step 4: Decide to give whatever you can. Give encouragement, smiles and use whatever your talents are to bless as many people as possible.
Moving On Step 5: Let go of the past; even the good things and the things you know were from God, so that you can grab hold of what God has for you today. Allow your present circumstances, no matter how difficult, to become the catalyst for your future.
The only thing keeping you from a life filled with all that God has for you is YOU! Let go of rigid ideas of “how things ought to be”. God’s ways are the River of Life. His ways are fluid not rigid. He will carry you when you need it but He can’t do much for you if you get out when the waters are rough. Hold onto Him, the best is yet to come!
For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.
